I bought a lot of superhero comics. Some favorites:
Avengers, Defenders, X-Men, New Teen Titans, Firestorm, Nova. As the 80s unfolded independent publishers started up, offering their books primarily to the direct market; there were enough comic book stores to support such non-superhero fare as
Cerebus, Elfquest, Love and Rockets, and much else besides, including undergrounds like
Gay Comics, Zap Comics, the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers. I bought more than I probably should have. But, as entertainment goes, comics were pretty cheap.
