Pet Sematery

From the diary: “January 16, 1985 – Finished Pet Sematery.”

This wasn’t the last Stephen King book I read, but it was the one that made me think his editors no longer had any power over him. It had its creepy parts but most of it (and that was many many pages) was the unhappy mundane life of a father who loses his child. I didn’t find that fun. Vampires! (Salem’s Lot) Killer car! (Christine) Girl with super psychic powers! (Carrie) – All much more fun.

That book could have been a hundred and fifty pages shorter and it still probably would have been too long. It wasn't my last King either but it was one had me think thrice about reading any of his later novels. Length no longer equalled many events. Often it meant stretching a story to three or four times its enjoyable length. Frustrating.

Hmmm they must've done some major editing of the book when they brought it to the screen because that was one of the scariest King movies I've ever seen.. Then again "IT" was the scariest one I can remember ;)

hey bflj,

I haven't seen the movie version of Pet Sematery. All I know is Denise Crosby is in it. I think great starring roles like that were what lured her away from Star Trek: The Next Generation. As far as King adaptations go I hafta say I'm fondest of the Sissy Spacek Carrie. Burn that prom!

I liked the movie version of Prisoner of Azkaban (which I fondly call Prisoner of the Ass Cabin). I didn't really remember what was in the book that didn't end up in the movie. But the Potter books get longer and longer. They'll hafta start making multi-part movies if they're going to avoid leaving out big chunks.
